R Douglas Gellenbeck Profile

R. Douglas Gellenbeck was a key figure in the reestablishment of the Gucci brand. He has created high-end retail and residential interiors in New York, London and Milan. His designs blend the client’s individual needs and personality into timeless spaces that are balanced and elegant yet purposeful and inviting. He works intimately with each client, building a mutually inspiring and fruitful relationship through each project.

Mr. Gellenbeck began his career in the New York design studio of William Sofield after receiving his degree in Interior Design from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. During his eight years at Studio Sofield, he was soon elevated to Associate Director, taking the lead on multiple residential and commercial projects, chiefly the global design development of exterior and interior concepts for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. He worked closely alongside Tom Ford, the creative director for both brands, to meticulously craft flagship stores around the world.

In 2005, Mr. Gellenbeck became Gucci America’s Director of Store Planning, building stores across Central, North and South Americas. The experience further affirmed his belief that interiors should be beautiful, durable, and functional. Similarly, as a founding member of the executive team at Belstaff, he played an integral part in the redevelopment and relaunch of the legendary brand as its Worldwide Director of Store Planning. Mr. Gellenbeck’s versatility as both artful designer and strategic planner offers a valuable, unique perspective in the development of high-end interiors.

This expertise was brought together most recently during the renovation of Bergdorf Goodman’s iconic main floor in 2016. Playing a central role in the project, Mr. Gellenbeck collaborated with Linda Fargo, Vice President of Store Presentation, and architect Michael Neumann to reinvent the celebrated store. The endeavor included custom fixtures and furnishings, painstaking restorations, and the reimagining of the 57th Street entrance.

The design studio of R. Douglas Gellenbeck continues to craft exceptional residential and commercial interiors. Recent and current projects include Nest Fragrances’ New York Flagship, store development for Calvin Klein’s global store network, and several private residences located in Manhattan.
